Fine art students set their sights high

An exciting exhibition of up and coming contemporary artists will challenge the York art scene, with a two day showcase of differing varieties of artistic practices.

York St John fine art students will host their first contemporary art exhibition at the School House Gallery in York. The opening night will take place on 12 January at 6.30pm and the exhibition will continue until the evening of 14 January.

The third year students have collaborated on every aspect, from marketing and promoting the event, to curating and displaying the work. The diverse content shows off the emerging talent in this one-off exhibition with work ranging from photo realistic painting to interactive internet art.

Martin Downie, the new Dean of the Faculty of Arts at York St John University, expressed his excitement for the event:

“It is great to see students operating in a professional environment. The activity of art production is more than the work itself - it is the organisation of the show, negotiation with each other and the gallery and interaction with the public. These student artists are the next emergent talent and they are better equipped to deal with the demands of their profession.”

Robert Teed, co-owner of the School House Gallery commented:

“It’s a privilege to be able to showcase such fresh and stimulating talent. They have done a fantastic job in organising the exhibition and I’m sure they will receive many positive reactions.”

Twenty three students are taking part in the exhibition and during the course of the display there will be the opportunity to talk to the artists about their work.
